India’s leading female wrestler, Vinesh Phogat, has been disqualified from the Olympic Games after she failed to meet the weight requirement for her final match. The 29-year-old was set to compete against Sarah Hildebrandt of the US in the 50kg freestyle category on Wednesday, a bout that would have ensured her at least a silver medal. However, Phogat was found to be a few grams over the 50kg limit on the morning of the match, according to the Indian Olympic Association.
As a result of her disqualification, Phogat will not secure any medal and will be placed at the bottom of the standings.
The news has caused widespread disappointment in India, with many expressing their sadness over the outcome. This was Phogat's third Olympic appearance and her closest opportunity to win a medal. On Tuesday, she had made history as the first Indian female wrestler to reach the final, having defeated Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman with a score of 5-0. Her journey also included a notable upset when she defeated reigning world champion Yui Susaki from Japan to advance to the quarter-finals.
Reports indicate that Phogat was 2kg over the limit on Tuesday night. She undertook rigorous efforts to shed the excess weight, including cycling, jogging, and skipping. Despite these attempts and the team's best efforts overnight, she weighed in slightly over 50kg on the morning of the match, according to the Indian Olympic Association.
Extreme weight loss before competitions is common among wrestlers and other combat athletes like boxers and MMA fighters. This process can be hazardous as it involves rapid fluid loss. Phogat had previously competed in the 53kg category in her two earlier Olympic appearances. This was her debut in the 50kg category, and she had reportedly faced challenges in meeting the weight limit during her Olympic qualifiers.
The Indian team has requested privacy for Phogat and emphasized their focus on the current competitions, declining to make further comments.
Last year, Phogat was a prominent figure in a prolonged protest against the wrestling federation’s chief Brij Bhushan Singh, who faced allegations of sexual harassment, which he denies. The protest garnered global attention, especially after Phogat and other wrestlers were detained while attempting to march to India’s new parliament building.
Following the announcement, Phogat received an outpouring of support from fans, who still regard her as a hero. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised her as a “champion of champions” and an inspiration for all Indians. He expressed his sorrow over the setback and encouraged her to return stronger, affirming that the nation is cheering for her.
