PUTIN AND KIM

North Korea and Russia have signed an agreement to strengthen their military cooperation, pledging to assist each other if attacked. This was announced by President Vladimir Putin, who emphasized the agreement's provision for mutual defense against any aggression, as reported by state news agency TASS.

At a press conference in Pyongyang, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un described the new relationship as an "alliance" and announced the signing of a "comprehensive strategic partnership" with defensive aspects. This marks Putin's first visit to North Korea in 24 years and signals a significant shift in their bilateral relations, which is being closely observed by Seoul and Washington due to concerns over their increasing military collaboration.

China, North Korea’s key ally, has remained largely silent on the development. Kim praised the agreement, highlighting its focus on cooperation in politics, economy, and defense, and described it as "strictly peace-loving and defensive."

During the summit, Kim expressed unconditional support for all Russian policies, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Putin, criticizing the United States and its allies for their imperialist policies, appreciated North Korea's unwavering support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine, as reported by Russian media.

Following Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has faced sanctions led by the United States and Western countries. Despite this, Putin received a grand welcome in Pyongyang, with an honor guard, civilian crowds, and a ceremony at Kim Il Sung Square. The leaders later held talks at the Kumsusan Palace.

Kim reiterated North Korea’s support for Russia, emphasizing the need for stronger strategic dialogue given the global security situation. He pledged full backing for Russia's efforts in Ukraine, which he framed as a defense of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Putin's visit underscores the enduring and resilient friendship between North Korea and Russia. Both countries, facing international sanctions, have strengthened their ties, with North Korea gaining political support and economic promises from Russia. The U.S. and its allies are concerned about potential support for North Korea's missile and nuclear programs and have accused Pyongyang of supplying weapons used in Russia’s conflict with Ukraine, claims both Moscow and Pyongyang deny.

Arriving in Pyongyang, Putin was greeted by Kim, and the two leaders shared personal thoughts on their way to the state guest house. North Korea’s state media lauded their partnership as a force for building a new multi-polar world and praised Putin’s visit as a testament to their strong unity.

In a further sign of deepening ties, Putin praised North Korea for resisting U.S. economic pressure and threats. He promised to develop new trade mechanisms independent of Western control and to work towards an equal security framework in Eurasia.
